Vin locked would mean that the program was loaded into the vehicle when the guy sold his truck. You can only use on one vehicle at a time. You load your stock program into the programmer then the canned program is loaded into the truck. The stock program is still in the programmer. You would need to send the programmer back to superchips to have reloaded. This would also require a fee on top of the purchase price. Don't buy it!
make sure you email the guy and ask him if it is already installed on another vehicle, as it can only be on one at a time. Otherwise......we'd all be using our buddies chips/tuners. Never heard of getting one re-loaded by superchip, but I'm guessing they would want an original reciept possibly? not sure. Better check first!
Yup. A VIN locked tuner will make a great paperweight and conversation piece, but nothing else. You must make sure it is NOT VIN locked. I got mine from a local guy here, and we loaded it up in my truck before I handed him the money. You can get a good deal on E-bay, but just be careful and make sure it is not VIN locked.
yeah, i bought one on ebay for $20, and the lady didnt know if it was locked or not... it was. i figured it was worth a shot for that.... if nothing else, i had a code reader if i ever needed it.
then i found an unlocked one and got it for $100. i love ebay.

First for the guy trying to buy off ebay. You can get it reset if you send it to superchip. Which I beleive is about $125. Call them and they will tell you. Just be honest with them.
I also have a superchip and am very pleased with it. The most impressive thing is the way my truck shifts now. The horse power is ok but there is only so much you can get out of a gasser.(I have a 5.4L) I pull a 20foot livestock gooseneck and when I have it set on Tow Mode, the shifting is so much better, it feels like the truck is not working near as hard as it is when it is stock.

when i emailed them trying to get the locked one fixed, they told me $200.
bbender - I kinda figured they would give you a price similar to that. I had checked on the vin unlocking and heard amounts ranging from $150 - $200. As you can see, you can find them unlocked cheaper, you just have to be patient (and a bit lucky sometimes...I paid $125 for mine).
ffadragon - how do you have your shift points set. The manual doesn't really say anything about just what changing the shift points and such actually do. I normally leave the shift points stock and run the chip in the 87 Octane mode (damn gas is getting 'spensive!). But I just reporgrammed it to tow my RV for this weekend. I used the "Max" setting on the shift points just to see what it does. I'd be real interested to know just how the different shift settings affect things.
I never programed my own shift points. I set it on "Tow" mode and used Superchips already set shift points. That alone made it shift so much better than stock. I have only had the superchip for about 5 months and really havn't had enough time to play with the shift points. I am a teacher and will have time this summer to do more playing around with it.
One other thing, I would like to know from others who have superchip if they have tried the "performance" or "Tow" mode with regular gas instead of 91 octane.
When I first got the chip I ran 91 on the Perf mode, then ran 91 on the Tow mode. Then ran 87 on Tow mode and noticed no difference in the way the truck performed between 87 and 91. I know that the manual says to only run 91 on perf and tow, but I really wonder if it makes a difference. I have been running 87 ever since.
Watch how high you set your shift points, I would hate to see you tear you tranny up.
