Cruise Control - loose stem

2000 E250, the stem where the cruise control selector meets steering column, is not a tight fit. I can wriggle it around, and hesitate to twist any
wires that I am sure are involved in this setup. How to best 'tighten' the stem connection to the steering column is the question. thanks.

It might not be a screw type tightening anyway. Try looking at what holds it in place. I've had a selector that was a clip fit, but I can't remember how I got it in or out.

clip fit?

As you can see by the reader/response numbers, the answer to this is not popularly known, or perhaps few have the problem. I presume mine is an after-market, dealer install device, in that I have Cruise Control when it is likely my Clock Spring is faulty (no horn, airbag light blinks 32).
It seems the stem connects to a collar, or perhaps through a collar. Trying not to twist wires too much, I can twist the collar to 'tighten' it on a near unconnected 'stem', and then what... Does not seem to help tighten/attach to the steering column. I was looking to see if the 'collar' had a pin hole, for tightening, without finding one yet. Very awkward for my fat fingers to work in this area, and to 'see' much in detail.
A missing 'clip' would explain a lot, if that is the case. Thanks.

That's what I was thinking when you talked about a "stem" by which I had presumed you meant a STALK sticking out of the steering column.

To my knowledge all the '92 & up E-Series w/FORD cruise control used push buttons in the steering wheel spokes/pad to operate CC.

I suspect a variety of different systems were installed by the aftermarket, making it very difficult to help you with specifics, blindly guessing what components you have.

Sorry man, I'm drawing a blank as to what you have in the truck. Might have to pull stuff to make the room to see what's going on.

I know on the dealer installed units they use a stem, stalk, whatever you want to call it. On our '04 there is a hex nut on the outside but I don't know what's on the inside. I'd think that if you have a collar out you may have either a nut or a C or E clip on the inside. You won't know until you pull the plastic covers off the steering column.

Would a FORD "dealer" even consider installing any aftermarket cruise control systems on new vehicles?

I know many conversion companys install often inferior, aftermarket CC systems. Let me continue to impress upon you that there are several different systems, using different components. If its got a stalk or stem '92 & up, its aftermarket.

Yes. My father purchased an '04 in late '05. It was an ex-enterprise rent-a-van. No cruise. He asked the dealer about installing cruise before purchase, and they did. It's got an aftermarket system on it. It has the stalk sticking out of the steering column behind the multi-function switch.

Actually I've noticed a LOT of car lately without cruise. It's easier to add now though, with the "drive by wire" systems it's just a program in the computer.

How 'simple' is it to pull the plastic covers off the steering column? Snap off, snap on? Much to 'remove'? thanks.

To pull BOTH "plastic covers off" on my '92 Chateau was a bit of a challenge.

There are several screws, mine included one down near the right lower front corner that must have been installed by the devil, the others were easy. However, to get the right hand cover "off" you also need to remove the ignition lock cylinder, a procedure that might intimidate you, but is easy if you know the trick.

The manuals I read also told me I had to remove the steering wheel & deal w/air bag, in order to remove the dash panel. However, I was able to twist & bend the panel & remove it w/o R&R the steering wheel.
