It is now required for scrappers to get all information from people selling copper. They must have a driver’s license as proof of identification and they must prove where the copper/metal came from and it is not stolen. This just came down from our AG and they stated of a scrapper accepts metal from a questionable source they will be in trouble.
I guess this could work in some cases, but I doubt that it will work in all.
My parents business has its AC unit copper taken while the unit was live. They stated it was a person that knew what they were doing or they would have killed themselves.
Personally I think if a person is caught stealing these items, you should be allowed to remove the same item/s from their house or take their vehicle.
I also hustle scrap when I can get it but all of the stuff I get is legal and it's origins can be readily proved. Most of the scrap dealers around here require photo i.d for copper, aluminum, ect. I don't know of any who will take a vehicle without i.d. One thing I have noticed is you are being watched when unloading. Even if you are on a first name basis with owner.I'm told the scrap yards can be charged with recieving stolen property even if they are unaware it's stolen.
