And this kind of crap, ladies and gentlemen, is what makes Americans seem self centered and disrespectful.
In this Mp3, a March 29th recording of Air Traffic Control around Orlando Sanford International Airport, you hear Allegiant Airlines flight 758 declare an emergency after it's front landing gear won't go down.
That part is all well and good...but then you hear this (insert favorite seven letter curse here ) of a man ("Seaplane 368") decide that the emergency-declaring airliner should wait, because God forbid his seaplane have to go around the airport.
Listen towards the end when, in the middle of the emergency as the airliner is flying it's final approach, this guy is blocking the frequency to complain to the traffic controller.
Thankfully, the Allegiant flight landed, had sparks and smoke from the partially retracted nose gear, slides deployed, people evacuated, one lady had a minor ankle injury and refused treatment.
It sounded to me like he was moved to another frequency, and that the recording was of multiple channels (everything the ATC tower was Rxing/Txing).
Otherwise, yeah, the guy was a *little* self-centered. Ooooh...he spent an extra $20 in gas--get used to it, flying's not cheap. If you can't stand the heat, get outta the kitchen.
It sounds like seaplane pilot needs some remedial training about emergencies. What was so difficult to understand about the need to sterilize the airspace? Its a situation where anything can go wrong, have to be prepared for it. Hopefully the FAA has a sit down with that seaplane pilot.
Emergencies and lifeguards get priority handling. Its about safety not about some idiot trying to save some fuel.

I've heard this myself around here though...guys complaining about the stupidest things, busting the airspace around Dallas that cuts right about over my house, things like that.
It just irritates me that somebody would put $20 in gas out as if it was the worst thing instead of realizing that $20 in gas would keep him out of the way of an airliner full of people in distress.
Whether pilots like it or not, emergencies get preference, as they should.
$20 in gas would barely get me out of the traffic pattern.
Knowing the FAA like I do, I am sure the pilot of the seaplane got a warning at the very least if he broke radio silence after a declared emergency unless he himself had an emergency.
Obviously the seaplane had other options for landing so he shouldn't have expected his convenience to override a declared emergency.
To stay on topic though, I hardly think you can judge Americans by this one guys actions. A-holes come in all varieties and we as Americans definitely don't have that market cornered. Let's see, anyone ever been to France?
Isn't that the truth. I've met some horribly self-centered a-holes in and from France. That being said, I've also met genuinely kind people in and from France as well, willing to do whatever they could to help you out, so all the same, no reason to judge the population based on a sample (that's a great way to say screw statistics...).
Although, we all know well that many others will make observations of Americans based on just a few experiences, movies, whatever, whether that is because that's their only way to make them, or because they choose to, it doesn't take much to make us look bad these days.
my pops is part of a 4 man team that own a plane, you should see these guys planning trips and getting excited like i do when i go fish or hunt....cracks me up.
i went two weeks ago with my dad for a little skip on down to the keys, flying 6000 ft along the gulf coast, the ten thousand islands is really ten thousdand islands, its beautiful.
had a chance to go again over the weekend, i dont care for flying commercial or crop dusters, so i elected not to go. (two weeks ago second time going up over the last 12 years or so.)
I worked in an FAA Flight Control Center some years back and was very impressed with the capabilities and professionalism of the air traffic controllers .... they do a great job. As a former pilot, my experience was that most flyers are "good people" with jerks like Seaplane a rare thing.
With the magic of the internet...The a..hole has a name. God forbid mayhaps one time he'll have to declare...Hopefully he will have airmen on the freq that will STFU!!..Feel free to drop him a line.

I think you are assuming (quite possible erroneously) that the owner was flying the plane. If you notice, the aircraft is registered as D/B/A which means it could possibly be a rental aircraft or one with numerous partners. Notice also the certificate mentions "Florida Seaplanes" as other names.
I'm sure the owner of the plane has been notified by now of the bad behavior of whoever was flying the plane at the time. And if it wasn't the owner flying it, I am sure he/they put the FAA in touch with the PIC at the time. The owner doesn't need hatemail.
Thankfully, the registration to my plane does not have my name listed on it - just the LLC name. It wouldn't take much research on my states web site to find my name and address but you won't get it from the FAA site.
If someone pulled a stunt like this flying my plane, it could be any one of 20 or more people that rent and that would be there last time flying it. Please don't assume the owner is the A-hole.
