i changed to the full synthetic and put in 7 oz of the friction modifier just to see what happened. over a period of 2 weeks it did seem to quiet down about 75%. It is to the point now that sometimes i hear it, but it is not objectionable and does not really bother me. before that i would try to coast and touch the pedal lightly, always playing with it to see if i could change the pitch. I thought it started a few weeks after i changed the oil and put in regular gear lube, and got quiet again after i put in FULL synthetic with the friction modifier. cant say for sure, but seem to be related to that. also the newer units have independant suspension and the pumpkin is mounted to the truck body and the alxe shafts "float". i think some of this is minor vibration or gear noise that is transmitted thru the mounts to the body. i really thing the new oil and adddative did help. (maybe by coating the gears?) i use 75w 90 gear lube.

From: Sac CA.
Royal Purple already has the friction modifer in it. Spent a long time looking, before buying fluid for my truck.

you can get 7 oz tube of friction modifier at Auto Zone for about $7. FORD sells a 4 oz bottle and sometimes that is not enough. You cant have too much in my opionion. I cant speak for RP, but lots of gear lubes say they have friction modifier, but most dont have enough. FORD dont add enought from the factory either.

I'll most likely go with the 2 bottles from the Ford Store, I have a friend that gets it at 10% above dealer cost so that save me a fortone on parts. Thanks for the info I just hope that this helps quiten it down some.

Can you describe the sound better? I have an 02 that sounded like a tire howl. Turns out it was a bad bearing in the rear end. Many dollars later it's all better.

it is like a bearing going down but at the Ford Dealer they checked it & replaced all the bearings just before it went out from under warrenty about 6 months before I bought it, somehow Chris got it under warenty for 100,00 miles when he bought it new , I got it from his Father & he also had it checked out & it is worse from 53 up to about 65. I checked the plug & it has no metal shaving on it. It has 117,000 on it now. I talked to the mechanic today who did the replacement of the bearings & he said everything look real good & that it did not have a posi unit in it & they used regular Ford Lube in it with no friction modifier in it, Chris's father changged it to Royal Purple with no additional friction modiyier added to it. I hope ths does the trick, I'll have the bearings checked again. Johnny

the noise between 55-65 is typical of "internal" vibration and gear noise and not related to bearings which would be constant noise. i know it sounds odd, but the syntheitic with friction modifier sugnificantly changed the noise in my truck. it does not have an LS unit. Maybe just a coincidence, but i dont see how, thats all i did.

Hope it works for me, I have the truck out of the body shop as of today & have the friction modifier here as well to put in it tommorrow when it is cool. Will let you know on this as soon as I get it done & ride it for a while. Thanks everyone.

steve, mine is the same. between 55-60 it has a whine in the rearend. it sounds kind of normal to me. it did get a little quieter when i changed the gear oil. mine is not the LS. i'm not concerned with it anymore as i think it's just typical of this rearend. i also think it has something to do with how it's mounted and the noise just carries more.

That howl is due to improperly cut gears in the rear end (a rather common Ford problem, not just in Explorers, according to my mechanic) ... since the kit and labor required (there is a TSB on this issue) are rather expensive, I just had the mechanic try replacing the lube with the lube specified in the repair TSB... it has quieted it down enough so that I can live with it for a while longer... the permanent fix would be to replace the bad parts with the kit, but it is a touchy and expensive process (need an experienced rear-end mechanic). Try the new fluid, you may get lucky like I did and it will change pitch or get quieter--mine changed pitch and volume, and now happens at around 45MPH (and goes away at 48 or so), which is much less annoying than what it was doing at 55--IMHO Ford should be fixing these for free, but they aren't.

I agree that Ford should be doing it free, I have a friend that works for ford & he said that Ford has let quality slip away & that the bean counters are in control now, profit first that is why the Toyota is #3 & gaining real fast on Ford for #2. Quality.

JohnnyR, I hate to fill you in but Toyota passed Ford a while ago and has at times and I believe shortly will pass GM as the #1 automaker. Ford has big big problems and you're right I think quality has slipped a long way. It's a real shame that loyal Ford buyers are moving over to the dark side and it seems Ford doesn't care.
