Has anyone tried installing a set of the post 2005 - 18 or 20 inch on a 2004 or earlier Super Duty? I've heard that it will work, but that wheel spacers may be required. Just trying to confirm & perhaps get a heads up to any potential issues. Thanks in advance!
Like redford said, the bolt pattern is the same but the backspacing is different, by more than a inch. '05-up wheels will sit inboard more than a inch from the stock when installed on a pre-'05. They kind of give you the railroad truck look and they do rub the leaf springs. Yes, you can use wheel spacers but it is not a recommended practice.
If you are looking for larger factory wheels for a pre-'05, the best choice is a set of factory 18"s off a '04.
My buddy who owns Discount Tire in Gtown pulled up the SD and he found 8x170 and 8x6.5.. Dont know if 8x6.5 is the Gas SD or not.. So there are two bolt patterns... Not sure why lol.. Mines 8x170

All '99-up SRW SD's are 8x170, gas or diesel does not matter. I believe there was a bolt pattern change in the mid to late 90's to 8x170, but im not sure what year this happened off hand.
the new sd trucks and excursions all have 8x170 mm.. there was a change on the thread pich on the studs on the 99-2000 trucks??pre sd trucks, they were all 8x6 1/2.

170 millimeters is 6.69291 inches, or 6.7 inches. There are not two bolt patterns. 8x170mm and 8x6.5 inches are the same pattern.
I had 18" wheels from a 2006 on my 2004. The offset is the problem due to coils. The 17" 2005 and later wheels will NOT work because of diameter, however the 18" will with very slight rubbing at full turn with stock size tires. You can get spacers to remedy this if it bugs you, but I don't know if you have to install longer studs. I personally did not like it but it was only for a few days while they ordered the tires i wanted, the dealer had stacks of take-offs.
