It's a truck engine. The cam is close to a HO cam, but with less duraton. It also has lower compression cast pistons compared to the 9:1 forged slugs in the good HO.

All 302 HO motors run the 351 firing order

Truck engines were also 9:1. As far as HO being cast into the intake, are you sure that was in all the HO engines? I was under the assumption that all the upper intakes after 87 (E7SE) were all the same, so why would they have HO cast into it?

All the data I have seen says the trucks are 8.5:1. I have a set of factory pistons out of my 5.8 that are dished. The flattops in it now just give it 9:1 CR.

The runners in the HO intakes are slightly bigger than the plane 5.0 intake.

I know the runners are both longer and bigger on the E7 manifolds over the E6 manifolds. But I thought that all the E7 manifolds were the same, Ill have to verify next time im out at the JY. As far as telling if its an HO or not, there is easier ways than removing the plate on top. If it has a 60mm TB, its the HO, also if it has yellow top injectors and a car style intake (and the engine hasnt been molested) its the HO.

Your chiltons book is wrong. The "base" 5.0 found in Crown Vics will have E6SE heads, easily identified by a large "S" cast into the lower front corner of the passenger side head, next to the valve cover (same location but reversed on the driver's side head) The water pump is a std rotation, and the accessory drive is a two belt serpentine system. It will be a roller motor though and a good candidate for a buildup when replacing the heads, pistons and intake.

Conanski's right on about the HO being cast into the upper intake. This was reseached by some members on the Ranger Power Sports V8 forum a couple years ago. The uppers look similar, but are different internally.

The 289 and non HO 302 have the same firing order. The HO uses a 351W firing order.

They all used the same blocks, from the base 5.0 to the HO and GT40 5.0. They also shared the same cranks, rods, lifters, rockers, etc plus a few other parts I can't think of right off hand. The cam, upper/lower intake, pistons and exhaust headers were the parts that set the H.O. apart from the rest.
