electronic shift upgrade for old aero
3<>4 aka OD and TC lockup are totally PCM controlled hydralically operated shifts
all others are mechanical based solely on vacuum modulator boost valve control of adjusting line pressure and the mechanical govenor located on output shaft measuring veh. speed
one of the main benefits of all electronically sensored and controlled shifting is there is no shift problems caused by ATF in temps below 40d F, delayed late shifts, hard engagements

this raises a new question...... i am afrade evan if i can find a 1986-87 trans its gonna have over a million miles on it... after reading this post it got me thinking.... maybe the way to go would be to use my OLD Valve Body & output shaft and possibly the torque converter (if necessary) ....... ... is this possible???.... will my OLD A4LD Valve Body interchange and mate up with a newer A4LD with electronic shift???. . . . would it be possible to convert a electronic shift to a machanical hydraulic shift?? . ....when i orderd the A4LD Trans-Go-Shift-kit it didn`t specify the year... so i asume the Valve body bolt pattern is the same for all A4LDs...... they also offer a adjustable boost valve up to 50-PSI .. if my memory servs me right you need to drill and tap the tail-shaft to instal it....
In your sitiation pay attention to manual M50D tranny. It fits aero well, just add clutch pedal unit with master cylinder and get a bit longer driveshaft. U will be surprised with fuel economy and how old aero can run fast, faster then 4.0 aero. Belive me, human braine is smarter old ford ECU.
