So here is my next idea, Can the V-10 tranny cooler slip right in my truck where the stock one is ? I have a 2002 f-350 7.3 Brian at BTS siad that would give me the most bang for the buck rather than bigger pan or aftermarket cooler etc.. anybody out ther have this setup and how hard was it to install? jeff
Before you start adding bigger coolers, I think you need to diagnose why your tranny seems to be running hotter than normal. Check out this thread to see what temps others are reporting. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/614802-whats-your-daily-trans-temp.html There is a fluid bypass line on the passenger side of the tranny that has a spring loaded valve with a check ball that is designed to open and by pass fluid directly back to the rear of the tranny so that it doesn't go through the cooler. Perhaps your cooler is partially clogged and building enough pressure to bypass some of the fluid. Also, it's possible that the bypass valve has failed partially open or has some dirt stuck in the check ball, and some of the fluid is being bypassed that way and not going through the cooler. If any of these problems exist, simply going to a bigger cooler is not the solution. Are you sure that your TC lock up clutch is engaging when it should? If not, this builds a lot of extra heat. I've read that when many pull their IC to clean it after a CCV mod, that they are surprised to discover a lot of fine debris down in the gaps between the AC condenser and radiator that can restrict cooling.
But to answer your question, I've read that some have used the air cooler from the V-10, but most upgrade to the one from the 6.0L PSD.
KwiK how much weight do you tow???, We just got back from a trip to Banks Lake Towing 10,000 I keep my rpm's under 2000 on the flats and over the pass 5th and 2500 rpms I avg. 12.5 mpg's
the 5 lb boost seems low mine runs 10 with 2300lb enclosed trailer
wish I could get mpg some of you get think if i glued a toy trailer or maybe even picture of trailer to hitch ball wood get 10 mpg
I was pulling my camper last weekend and the outside temp was around 85 degrees. I have a stock 2002 7.3. Only pulled 25 miles but there are alot of hill in foothills of SC. My temps reached around 195. Is this normal? 90000K miles and don't know if the fluids have been changed.

i pulled the 10k lb 5ver up through Franconia Notch saturday late morning... ambient temp was around 75 degrees... the tranny temp stayed right around 140ish until i had to drop out of od and climb the miles long steep strech up to the top of the notch... tranny temp went just over 180 then dropped back down around 120 as i rolled down the backside of the notch... cruising home on monday... ambient temps slowly rose from about 74 to around 82 by the time i got back... i was able to keep it in od almost the entire trip... tranny temps barely got above 140... lots of downhill runs, and very few shifts out of od really kept the tranny nice and cool... these are very similar numbers that i get on any towing run... my mule is an 02 with just some basic mods...
