around here they usually go for the 20-25 dollar mark for hay. alfalfa goes for a bit more. still cheaper than kibbles-and-bits!!

One has to consider the cost of beef these days too. I'll admit I'm a relative noob to farming and raising cattle, but if I did get a cow obviously it would have to give birth in order to provide milk. The offspring then become steak at some point. With t-bones worth $27 a pair, I think it would be economical in the long term. My oldest is only 5 and we are using over a gallon of milk per day. I can only see that number increasing.

I currently have a little over 9 acres. 3-4 are already seeded for pasture. All I need is a fence and some work done to the barn, and off we go. Well sort-of, need a trailer to transport hay/feed, a pump for drinking water from my ponds, a bigger tractor to handle bails ......

Hmmm sounds like an adventure.

Electric fence is cheap and fast to do, just have to keep a close eye on it and preferably it`s in an area where isn`t alot of traffic.

What size, type, and quantity do you have? We are always looking for hay but usually will buy if the price is cheap. We bought some 2 year olds at an auction sale for $2 each!! There were 1500 there and I got 500. Bought some heavy alfalfa very little rain but slightly mature when cut for $25 in the field last year.

Only afew squares left now that the horse owner didn`t want.
Last fall I could buy some nice 1,100/1,150 lb hay/alfalfa bales for $20 each close by. I don`t know if there is any left.

We used to get 10 dollars for a small square bale, in the drought years, now it even worth it to bale anymore.

I like the small bales for the handling and being able to stack them in a small area. There are still people who like to use square bales. Just the rounds make it easy for large operations, but small acreage owners or soemone with maybe two horses it a pain. You have to have a tractor big enough to move the round bales, now the new ones that are big giant square bale. Just a small bale by 100x's
