skinning fish?

ok,i know this is a question, but where is a good web site to get directions to skin and gut fish? I did it many years ago when i was a kid,but haven't done it since then. I took the kids out sunday and we caught a few nice channel cat,but i ended up giving them to a nice lady that was fishing beside us because i wasn't sure i could remember how to skin them and i didn't want them to die and go to waste while i found out. thanks,Ben

A website that teaches how to skin fish? Now I have seen everything on the internet.

Catfish are easy - no scales. Just hang them on a hook by the mouth, make a little slice in the skin behind the gills and pull the skin off using a pair of pliers. Make sure the fish is dead when you skin it, they prefer that.

After skinning, slice open the belly and gut them. Remove the head and cook as desired. I prefer deep-fried in course corn meal.

Don't forget the hush puppies and slaw....and a whole lot of iced tea.

chop off head.

gut the fish.

start cutting along both sides of the spine staright down to the belly.

once you have two fillets, skin side down, place blade between skin and flesh, and work knife all the way to the end of tail.

go slow use a sharp knife and you wont waste much meat.

Fillet a catfish? Say it isn't so.

You gotta cook them with the bones in them and the fins and tail still on. They taste better that way.

I use a electric knife to clean anything I catch thats big enough to filet. I have a Townsend fish skinner I use on bream. You cut off the head. Slice the fish down the top by fins to the tail & do the same on the bottom. I pull the fins with skinning pliers & use the skinner to roll the skin off. I like them better this way than scraping the scales off.

I'm a catch and release fisherman (flyfishing).

I throw them back, head to the campground, grill some meat and veggies, and drink my beer, with Wild Turkey chasers.

Somewhere out in whatever deep woods of Florida are left, there must be a good old-fashioned fish camp. Go there and you will see lots of caucasian Americans eating Catfish the prehistoric way as you put it. Without the skin and head and guts, catfish cooked with the bones in it is very easy to eat and tastes fantastic.

To each their own though.

Now where I come from, flounder, cod and haddock is best when you filet it. Baked, broiled, grilled, fried - I don't care how it is cooked, just don't dry it out.

I'm getting hungry!

I'm a catch and release hunter. I let them go after I shoot them. They always chose to just lay there though.

Anyone want to know how to skin a buck or a rabbit?

I also know several ways to skin a cat.....

Trout,

Gut, by making a notch at the rear opening. Slice gills underneath at front. Make a slight cut at the roof of the mouth behind the gills. Make a slice on belly, from gill to the rear notch you made. Grab fish buy its mouth and head, then grab the gills and pull to rear removing all inards. Wash out, season to taste, and throw in the frying pan on the campfire. Turn once and then eat. Mummmm ummmm. It up to you whether you eat the skin or not. (or head, if you are a true redneck). I ain't because the heads make me ruin' a good beer.
Dang it, now I have to go trout fishing this weekend!

Rick

Ha ha, Haaaaaa haaaa hhaaaaa hhhhaaaaaa hhaaaaaaaa!

Well, I to am a hunter, I shot a buck one time, that I thought in my excitement was a biggun. Nope it was just a two point, western count. That would be a four point for you all, east of the big river. No matter how hard I kicked that scrawny deer, it would not jump back up and get into the hunt! Not much venison that year.

But I too am a flyfisherman. But thar is no rule saying us fly fishermen cannot eat a few of our catch. I love trout! both on my hook, and in my frying pan!
