would there be any problem putting a 2002 5.4 motor in my early 99 SD
which has the 5.4 in now with 120k, the 02 only has 30k on, should I swap
the trans out at the same time? I can ge both for a good price. thanks for
any help
early 99s were built with the small 5.4 and I'm towing a 26ft travel trailer in the Arizona mountains and short on power, plus a lot of ratteling from engine under heavy power
Not sure what you mean by the "small 5.4". I thought they were the same until 05 when they went to the 3V. Anyway, I think a rear-end swap to 4.30's would work better for you than an engine swap. Should be a lot cheaper too! Something to think about.
That's going to be a lot of time, effort and money and you won't hardly gain a thing in power (with regards to a stock engine swap).
The '02 5.4 will be the same as your '99 5.4. They're both the 2 valve head versions, both rated at 260 hp (flywheel).
Not until '05 do you get to the 3 valve version of the 5.4, rated at 300 hp.
If you're just looking to freshen up your truck with newer, lower-mileage engine, then go for it. But you won't be make any additional power to write home about.
I had 150K on my '97 Expy with the 2V 5.4L and it still ran strong. I can definitely tell the difference in power on my newer '05 Expy with the 3V 5.4.
But I still got a Powerstroke to pull our 28' travel trailer. Even though the 5.4 can handle it, it's working pretty hard lugging that trailer around, and it was sucking about 6-8 mpg on the highway.
If your dead set on staying with a 5.4, and you want to yank the engine, then whether you rebuild your existing one or drop in a newer one, sticking with the '97 - '04 2 valve version will give you more power upgrade options, like performance intake manifolds, heads, cam, etc. There's a lot you can do to that 5.4 engine.
