While wheeling? --> Find out how deep it is. If you are going to constantly test the limits and don't want to have to turn away from a water hole...install a snorkel system.
Other than that don't worry about it. It won't happen with normal driving. But i am sure you knew that! :-)
seeing how i just sunk my truck this last weekend i would agree 100% withthe above post. check the depth of the water and also factor in that you are going through with a 6k lb truck and the mud is gonna give.
the snorkel is the best way to go as the stock air box is begging for water to come in on deep crossings. you can come up with one your self of buy one. i have seen a couple of links for the on the threads here.
also keep in mind the air box isnt the only thing to be adressed for water. the dizzy, plugs and wires as well as alot of electrical conections.
One thing I might mention. the placment of the intake on the top of the rad doesnt hurt your deep water profermance because the seal of that tube is not tight enough to the air box. This is because the water is too thick to suck as fast as air. The air will suck through the gap in the seal instead of suck water.
Another thing, When you momentarly put the intake (the whole airbox) under water, the truck will probubly stall before sucking water. Again, the water cant move fast enough and it creates such a vacume that it just stalls. But, if your truck sits in water above the intake, of course it will leak in. Than if you hit the starter, you could have serious trouble. Espeacially, if one cylinder fires with another full (or half full) of water.
I have driven through water that was deeper than my hood. But I got through it and up before all the air under the hood was used up. Everybody watching couldnt believe it. It didnt even get in the cab. It definatlly got my heart pumping. LOL
Also, if you get stuck in water up to your floor boards and stall the truck. Very often the starter will quit. If you get towed out and wait about fifteen minutes, it will dry out and start right up. This has happend to me several times. I was told ford starters dont work under water as good as chevys. I dont know why. it is very irratating because I wasnt stuck very bad. If the truck would have started, I could have driven out. I actually had to be towed out by a dodge. Although he wouldnd even think about driving in where I was.
LOL is it a lot of work to water proof my truck? i mean i am fixng my transfer case my self. so is it harder and more time consuming then that? Anyone water proof there truck? Thanx for the advise. I found a snorkel for $500.
I have seen a Bronco with a snorkel. It was cool, but they had to come out of the fender on the drivers side. It is preferable to come out pax side so it doesnt cause as much of a blind spot running up the door post. Other than that, spray alot of silicone on the distributer. Deisels shine in this reguard. I dont know what to do about the starter. But if you dont stall, it's not a problem.
