I have an '04 FX4 that has given me trouble since day 1. I guess that's what I get for buying the first year of a redesign. My question...are the newer years any better? I'm so fed up with this thing, and getting lousy service, that I just want to get rid of it (at a new dealership).
Yea 2004 was the worst year for problems your are right buying first year of redesign is a bad idea i hear 2005 and 06 , 07s are a lot better most people have no troubles with those years compared to the 04s
I traded my 04 FX4 for a new 07 FX4 about 6 months ago. I had to replace pads & rotors at about 70k and the tires only lasted 60k. So far the 07 is doing much better but it only has 16k on it so far.

Brakes at 70, tires at 60, and you're complaining???
What issues have I NOT had?
I have 33k on my '04 FX4 right now. Here's a basic rundown of what I can remember off the top of my head (I have it all recorded too, just not with me)
Blower motor for air condition/heater gone bad
front automatic hub on right side engaging at highway speed causing grinding sound, in dealership FIVE times, once replacing the trucks computer, other times doing TSB's on vacuum system, vibration issues, multiple trips for broken tailgate torsion spring lift assist, limited slip clutch packs shot and replaced, broken shift lever on floor shifter, stone chips in paint when I took delivery, needed to repaint tailgate. I can't even remember all of them. Besides all that, the service SUCKS! I'm so fed up with my entire ownership experience. I will stick with a Ford because it sounds like they've fixed the issues and I can't stand the Dodge's and I won't buy a Chevy.
Sorry to hear about all of your problems. I bought a used '04 FX4 a few months back with 17000 miles and the only problem I had was the shudder in the rear end. The service department was great and put a new drive shaft in under warranty and no other problems since. It drives and runs great! I hope I'm not in for some trouble. I did buy an extended warranty in case though!
I have an 04. No problems. 26K miles. Best truck I ever owned. It has 6year/60,000 mi. warranty and have never used it! I hope i get 60,000 out of my tires and brakes!!!

70k on brakes.....is good...
60k on truck tires....is great.....
i wouldn't complain if i were you... i put tires on my 05 at 32000

I agree! Those are actually pretty good numbers. I had to replace tires on my 05 @ 25k. But tires are tires 300hp, light rear end and a heavy foot = the demise of most tires :-)
I have an 05 ext cab 4x4 5.4l xlt with 34k and have had no problems. Love the truck!!
The 04 had there problems but some have no problems at all. I would say the 05 and up most the problems people had with the 04 were taken care of.
I have an '04 4x4 SCrew that just turned over 50k miles. I'm the 2nd owner at 40k miles. Nothing major wrong with it. The 3rd brake light leaks, but seems to be a common problem.
