Hi Everybody,
I'm new to the forum and I have a simple question about my 89 Big Bronco. How much would it cost to replace a power steering pump and gear box. The mechanic down the road says $750-800. Seems a little high to me. This is the breakdown he gave me:
new gear box $332.00
new power steering pump $115.00
gearbox labor $120.00
ps pump labor $160.00
Let me know when you get a chance, guys.
Thanks,
Nate

When you join Club Bronco, you need to either get used to big $$ quotes from your local garage or prepare to barque yer knuckles doing the work yourself. The $750 isn't that far out of line considering they likely charge $40 - $50 US for labor and mark the parts up 100 to 150%. I just bought a rebuilt gearbox for my '84...cost me
$256 CDN (+150 core deposit, KEEP THE BOX)

at least change the pump yourself and save some $..purge it too after you add the fluid....if you need more info, just ask...you need sturdy stands to raise the front wheels off of the ground..chock the rear!!!....turn the steering wheel to purge air..and add fluid to keep it full.
you need pitman arm seperator tool and a tie rod end remover (borrow or rent them) to remove the gear box plus a socket set + torque wrench and a manual...and a pan for the fluid....bronco needs to be raised for this too...you can do it!....be safe though!
good luck,
