I'm a bit frustrated guys. One certain unnamed teenybopper was on my pc. Found on of those "Get 10 bazillion free smilies...click here" type deals, and proceeded to trash my pc.
I think that I have all of the virus removed, but the registry is trashed. No, I don't have the windows software to just format the darn thing. I've tried various registry repair programs, none of which seem to solve the issue.
So, now I'm on the girlfriends pc, running around the net downloading various fixes, sending them to floppy disk, and running them on my pc. I am making progress, but the thing is not repaired.
I've got no desktop, and seem to be missing registry files.
Hopefully you are not logged in on the local admin account.
Log in as local admin and got to
C:\documents and settings\<username> and delete all files that start with NTUSER. you will have to "Show hidden files". Then log back in as the affected user and the profile will be recreated.
Hmmmm. I really can't log in as anyone. I don't get a start up bar, or start up button. I get a blank screen. I can use task manager to run various commands, but that's about the extent of my abilities at the moment.
I have managed to open several of the anti virus programs and run them, and the issue now seems to be missing registry files, as opposed to corrupt ones.
I wonder if I can download specific files from another pc and copy them over?
Terry, at the command prompt, can you run msconfig
Thanks, but nope. "msconfig is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."
I'm at "c:\Documents and Settings\Terry>_
And can't seem to get much of anywhere. If I reboot the system, I can use task manager to get to some of the windows components, but not all of them. I can get to registry editor, but I'm not able to fix a problem that I can't identify.
