I'm a couple weeks away from my 19th birthday and I'm dealing with the sleep things lately. I do actually feel better than ever, and I wake up alot through the night, 10 times or more I bet. I usually go to bed between 12-1am, and I'm always watching the clock ready to hit snooze when it goes off at 7am.
I'm 53 7-8 hours is what I get. Just wake up going to the head all the time. Depreission can cause it. My daughter and brother have a hell of a time with. Try reading or mabe taking a shower. Maybe its your job. Maybe its not a problem. Good luck.
Well, the old saying "you need 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep for your body to recooperate" is still true. .
There was a fairly large study that concluded that getting significantly more or less than 6.5 hours of sleep raised mortality rates. After 7.5 hours the mortality rate increased sharply.
I found the link on the web but I'm not sure what exactly I was searching for when I found it.
I usually get 5 hours a night, 6 max. If I sleep more then that I feel like I am more tired, and lazier. I remember a few years back I got a constant 4 hours a night for a few weeks, and I felt really weird. Kind of all spaced out. For me the extra hour or two made all the difference.
Im not really much of a medicine kind of guy at all either. I think that if you want to try to get more hours of sleep a night, go and work your body to the bone. I mean hit the gym, for 4 or 5 hours after work. Your body will be really tired and you will be able to tell if your body needs more sleep or not!
Some good responses, thanks. I was reading into "Polyphasic sleep" which I found by chance when searching 3 hour sleep. It seems that is exactly what I tricked my body into.
Yeah, I've had rather poor sleeping habits for a long time. Can't say I've been terribly stressed about anything really. Some stuff has happened, but just normal life stuff, nothing I fret over too much. I work on a farm so I'm pretty active during the day. It varies, but rarely is it very easy. I get home and take my dog for a walk (before work too usually), then the last week or so I've been going for a good bike ride after that. I even hit the weights (not too heavy) a couple times a week. Activity should not be a problem. I have problems getting enough calorie in it as it is, I don't think I need to work my body even more.
I guess I won't fret over this much either, but you guys let me know if start sounding more insane than usual, OK?

8 hours is still very close and is still the rule of thumb, especially for people who take sedatives for sleep, such as Ambien or Benadryl. Now, yes, as mentioned people feel fine with much less and I agree that much more than 8 hours of sleep has it's help problems, but If you need more than 8 hours, there is another medical issue other than insomnia going on.
And yes, don't take advice from non-medical experts about what to do with sleep or any other medical issue. It's nice to know actually what people get for sleep, but this is very individualized and shouldn't compare yourself to others. If you are concerned, I'd go see a M.D.
I sleep as much as needed. i work 2nd shift, days over at 9pm but i havent stayed that late in a while. Some days I'm awake till 5am, some days I'm out at 9pm. either way i sleep till 1 pm, internal clock same time every day. Some times i can go over a day without sleep, other times 14 hours of sleep don't seem like enough.
If you get through day to day life fine then i wouldnt worry about it. if it starts bugging you or effecting your work then talk to a doctor.
Last spring/summer, I used to go into work at 6pm and work until we were finished with what we had to do (usually around 12am-3am), and even though my schedule changed in the Fall (now working 4pm-8pm, or as late as I want), I still dont get tired until ~12am to this day. I usually crawl in bed around 1am and sleep 'til 9:30-10am. I cant go to sleep before that, or I just lay there wide awake.
I hate it. I wish I could go to bed at 12am and get up at 8 or so...
I am on call 24/7/365. For a H.V.A.C. Mechanical Services Company. My regular shedualed work hours are 7:00am to 3:30pm. I generally only sleep 5 hours max. I have sleep like this for best part of my 42 years.
Winter Service calls or Boiler Installs, I can get 1 to 2 hours sleep in and back to work for 7:00am. Boss always tells me I can come in late on the nights I do a ton of service calls, but I am always awake at 5 am anyways even the Weekends Holidays. It might change after tonight. We're having a new bed delivered.

it may sound kinda strange but to the guy that started this thread, about an hour before you usually call it quits and head to bed, go seclude your self in a vigorous workout, stairmaster if you have one, jumping jacks, pushups and some sit ups, get into it for about 20 minutes or so.
after your already long day combined with that about an hour before you go to bed with a shower after the workout, it may help a little.
your body should already be programming itself for repair(sleep) maybe this will jumpstart it a little quicker.

Reason: mispell
I can ususally get 7-8 hrs but seldom in one uninterrupted interval....almost always wake up after 4-5 hrs & sometimes it takes me a while to get back to sleep.
I also have apnea (where you stop breathing) yet still get a restful sleep.
PS: I think I read somewhere that you can't "make up" lost sleep.
furball 69 has the right idea. The Canadian Gov. did a study on people over a 100 years old, around the world. What did they eat, where they lived ect. The most common factor among them was they get 8 to 10 hrs of solid sleep a night. By the way I get 8 to 10 hrs.
Exercise raises your endorphins which wakes you up so doing it before bed probably won't help. I have heard though that working out earlier in the day helps regulate your body and your sleep patterns so if you are keeping active that should be helping. Maybe that little sleep is fine for you...
I've been going through a weird sleep phase lately. I used to go to bed at like 10:30 and wake up at 6:30 and feel alright. Now I get a second wind at around 10 or 11 and I can't fall asleep til midnight or 1am and I'm dead tired at work all day the next day. When I get home all I want to do is nap but I try not to so I'll be able to go to sleep at night but again I can't. Its really messing me up.
