On a engine swap, for a 390 FE. What kind of transmission crossmember do i use? Is there any general shape or rule of thumbs or has someone done this swap that has pictures of the crossmember they made? I have the engine swap crossmember for the engine, but they only had automatic crossmembers, so il'l fab mine up. Just be helpful if someone had a little advice on this. This is going in a 1957 F-250.
Thanks for any help, it will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the article. Do i need to worry about angles of the transmission and what not for proper allignment? Thanks for the help so far. This swap will be happening in the next month.
When I put the 390 in my f600 I used the original '56 tranny crossmember in the existing location. I spaced it down from the frame about one inch for clearance under the cab. Works great. I put a 4 speed in mine.
The 223/292 trans crossmembers up to 1964 are riveted to the frame. On FE equipped trucks, the crossmember bolts on. The 223/292 cross members are half moon shaped. The FE c/members are basically straight.
trans dapt makes a swap kit for this as i was gonna purchase one from dons hot rod shop in arizona but ended up going another route still using my trusty fe and c-6 .
The original tranny crossmember was riveted to the frame, but the bellhousing was where it was mounted, there was no crossmember behind that til the drive shaft carrier bearing. The FE 3spd has a mount towards the back of it on the tailshaft housing. I was going to buy one out of LMC but they only offer one for C4/C6 trannsmissions.
I wouldn't think the angle on the trans/engine would make much difference in the x-member. The rubber mounts should handle the alignment difference. I guess if you really wanted to be perfect you could add the angle into the mount points... but that's getting a littttttllllleeee picky. Just bolt the mount to the transmission rubber mounts then clamp the ends to the frame and bolt it in...the rubber will flex to fit...
Oooops! I used a crossmember out of the donor early 70's truck. Cut out the original crossmember and built one that sits lower to replace it. Boy, hell to get old and not remember. And I did this only a couple of years ago?!
