So my 78 F-150 has an np435 with the granny first gear, and a mechanical clutch setup. I was wondering if anyone has managed to swap in a hydrolic setup from the early 80'. My buddy just picked up a 83 f-250 with a 400 and a standard tranny. It has the hydro setup and i was curious if this is possible. We haven't taken the truck apart yet, but i did think it might work. I know i'll have to swap the pedal setup in, and the piston on the bellhousing. My real question is about the slave cylider. Anyone have any ideas?
I have a question for you. Why? Sure linkage wears out over time but so do hydraulic cylinders. Bleeding the system after any repair work is at best a royal PITA.The pedal setups are different and would likely require some fabrication to make it work. You didn't say what engine is in your F150 but if it's a 351M or 400 you may be able to swap out the bell housings and brackets.Hope this helps.
the why is because the truck is a woods/trail vehicle only. With the mechanical setup it has now, there is alot of movement between the bellhousing and frame rail. It really sucks to have to lie in the mud and pop the clutch rod back in. The fabrication doesn't scare me to much though. Its a 351m.
I forgot what fun it is to lay in the mud fixing linkage. Check the bell housings. The bolt patterns are the same for the block. If the parts truck has an NP435 the pattern will be the same too.I just can't remember if the bell housings are the same. You might want to send a p/m to numberdummy with the info from both trucks and ask him to look up the part numbers for both bells. He has helped a lot of the members here including myself. At worst you may have to pull the trans to swap the bells. Also check the clutch fork as the ends may be different.
