Remove the complete grille assy. The center section that you want to paint is held in place by numerous "wedge"type grips. A small thin blade screwdriver pressed into the grip and moderate pressure on the center section will get it done. I removed mine and repainted it black. Looks much better than the faded gray.
Yep, I did this to my original '97 grille, looked 10x better when it was repainted black. Although I just masked mine off and painted it. To remove the whole grillle the main screws are around the headlights and IIRC it will be far easier if you remove the heads and corners, I think there is one or two you can't even get to without removing the corners. Mine came off in pieces after a wreck so it was really easy
i am going to try and just remove the grille in a few minutes from now. i also want to try and install driving lights - mustang style, in the process of the whole thing - i'll let you know how it goes

Good luck ! !
There's a good mounting place on the bar behind the grille for lights. You going to cut out holes in the grille for the lights ??

I might fab a steel grille and install a mesh similar to the Stang, I'll see how it goes and how creative I can get- too much projects and not enough time -
I have a girlfriend now- and she has too legs, not four wheels- get it.
Take the black cover off, the one that goes over the radiator. There are a row of screws across the top of the grille. They may be visible with that cover in place, I don't remember. Lift the two "slides" on each headlight and they'll drop out. There's one screw (visible when you remove the headlights) holding the turn lamps in. Two bolts on each side/end of the grille shell t remove. There are two wedge/pinch type retainers on the bottom rail of the header panel to un-snap. That's it. Easier than it sounds but you'll see once you get started.
ncranchero, thanks for the info--------------off thread warning--------------
