they sure can. usually they will take various vehicle parts off before breaking if the "stuck" is that bad...voice of experience here...

Ive been fortunate, I havent really broke anything major while pulling, or getting pulled out. Ive been stuck, and pulled out a ton of guys that have been stuck too!

nothing beats hearing the bolts snapping as you pull the rear axle out from underneath a chebby...

After spending too many years in ag, trucking and construction work, I have seen enough towing carnage that I absolutely will not mess around any more - too many close calls and broken pieces!

yeah...we were pulling a guy out of the ditch with my uncle's dodge/cummins. this was my pre license days. he had her wedged into the snobank so bad...well...we felt pretty bad. but he took it well. we did take him home and run him to the tow truck. he wouldn't let us pay for it though...great guy.
