Power loss

I have a 1999 F250 PS. When I am accelerating or under load (pulling a trailer for example), at a little over 2500 rpm, my turbo makes a whooshing sound and there is a significant power loss. If I get off the accelator and reapply power below 2500, the power is back. No check engine lights come on. I have not been able to check the codes yet.

Any suggestions as to what is causing this?

Is this occuring during max engine loads? Could it be the PCM commanding defueling? The whoosing sounds like the extra air coming back through your intake. This is common during gear changes and decelaration. I take it you don't have any gauges or mods on your truck.

isint that the problem with the turbo surge, it sounds like you will need to upgrade you turbo housing to ATS to avoid the turbo damage, sounds like its working at its max efficiency , this is common on those trucks, get Wicked Wheel and ATS compressor housing, that will take care of your problem,
do you get the same surge when you dont tow ? if you dont most of the time this is you turbo screaming i had to much, time for upgrade,

check this thread out

Sounds to me like you are either de-fueling or something is starving like the HPOP or you might have a clogged fuel pickup in the tank and fuel pressure drops off during high load (fuel demand)
The resulting whoosh is simply the turbo spooling down because it's not being driven by exhaust pressure anymore.
When you back off on the throttle it gives whatever the problem is time to recover and then you can step on it again.

Yes, this does happen during max demand, both pulling heavy loads and when I floor it to accelerate into traffic.

I don't have any mods on the truck. What codes would I expect to see if it is a fuel problem? Could this be something simple like a filter or am I looking at a major repair? If this continues, do you think it will cause damage?

Thanks to all of you for your insight and quick responses. This web site is the best. I only wish I had more to offer instead of just asking for your help.

Well, how many miles is on the fuel filter? Change it, it is the easiest thing and you can rule that out.

50,000 MILES??? Strokin'_it is right you need to change that filter. Supposed to be done every 15,000 miles.

Did you mean 5K, or are you serious with the 50K. 15K tops or once a year whichever comes first. Have you ever run any additives (Stanadyne, Diesel Kleen, Diesel aid)? If your truck is a sitter and not a daily driver then there is a possibility of algea in the fuel tank.

OOPS.... Yes I meant 5K. I try to change the filter every 3rd oil change. I have run some additives but not consistantly, maybe once every 6 months I put in some Amsoil diesel concentrate to help clean things up.
