Yes, using type F fluid in a Dexron II application will cause harsher shifts, which is fine... But to use Dexron in a type F application will cause slippage and burn clutches out.
I have to agree with 2020. I read the same information, and obviously, can attest to this with the many miles of great service from my C6.
ok, listen up for a sec. Since no one is sure of which fluid it takes (I agree with mil1ion) and dex is just a modified form of type f would it hurt the transmission to use type f instead of dex, I have to drain it anyways to adjust the band. I don't think the transmission is ruined just because i used Dextron in it. I really haven't even driven it but about 5 miles with it in there anyways. I don't think you know what you are talking about arctic y block. Dextron has friction additives to reduce friction. So if anything that maybe the reason why it seems to slip a little, but I definitely don't think it would hurt the bands anymore than type f would. I'm going to try to remove the governor this weekend any see if the piston is stuck. Also does anyone know where I can find the square nut tool to adjust the band with, other than the dealership. I tryed ebay but none listed at this time. Thank you
All I'm trying to say my friend is that having worked on and rebuilt 1000's of C6's. If it had type F in it Do Not change as this will cause problems. If it had Dex than stay with Dex. I have used Dex in fresh rebuilt early C6's with no problem. But to change from F to Dex in a used C6 has allways led to failer. I hope this helps and makes more sence. I also think you have a broken shift rod in the valve body. Even though the linkage moves through all possitions. Does not mean it is shifting in the valve body. There are notches in the shifting rod in the valve body and 9 times out of 10 the tab or lobe will brake off and will not let the shift rod move from first gear. You should still be able to back up also. Hope I have been of some help and sorry that I did not make myself clear.
thanks for the info on the shift rod arctic y block. I'm curious now. I still haven't checked the governor yet though. I had a breakthrough yesterday. I drained about a quart of fluid and added a quart of lucas transmission fluid. It now shifts from first to second, although it shifts so early that it's almost unnoticed. And now if I'm in second and am up to speed and shift into "D" it will shift into third gear. It still won't do a 1-2-3 shift, just a 1-2. Could the shift rod still be a possible cause. Based on what I've read on others forums that are similar, I think maybe if I remove the valve body and try to clean it, it might help some. I've never done this before, it looks as if it is pretty straight forward and I'm pretty inclined to do it, I just wanted to know if i could reuse the gasket and if not where can I find one to go back in there. Also, when I take all of the bolts out is this thing going to come flying out with springs shooting out everywhere..j/k, example. And I still need to know what size square drive the band adjustment screw is to that I can purchase the correct size socket for it. Thanks for all of the advice.
I beleive after your last post that the shift rod and valve body arn't your problem. If the shift rod were broke it would not shift even with Lucas. Being that it is trying to work better with the Lucas tells me that the clutches and bands are worn out and it needs overhauld or replaced. I can't tell ya what socket ya need as I don't have a C6 handy to go look. But I don't think adjusting the band's will help for long if at all. It is only a few hundered dollers at major transmission exchance stores, like Transmission Exchange in Seattle to get a replacment with converter. Thay are also easy to overhaul with basic auto repair skills. And it sounds like yours needs no hard parts that won't come in the kit. The kit also has detailed directions. The thing to remember is to soak the new clutches over night in a coffie can full of Dex or Type F (whatever fluid ya choose). As ya never install clutches dry. Be sure that what ever fluid ya start with ya stay with or the trans will most likely fail. Again I hope I have been of some help. Now back to cleaning the shop so I can do an engine swap on Rusty. Good luck my friend.
Hmmm... You've inspired me! I may actually try a C6 rebuild on my own some day, especially if the kits come with detailed instructions!
Pictures, too? ? ?
ok, here's the situation. I'm going to post this here because everyone here knows about my truck already. My original intentions was to keep this truck as kind-of a stock looking hotrod. About two months ago my 2 year old daughter had a near drowning accident. She's been out of children's hospital for about a month now. She has sustained brain damage and now we would like to put her in hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which isn't cheap. I must sell this truck. My efforts to fix this transmission isn't working. I wanted to sell the truck for 2,500 but now I'm thinking maybe about 2,000. The motor has been completely rebuilt w/ ac, ps and electronic trailer brake. Truck has factor camper hauler package and is in pretty good shape. Paint is factory canary yellow with white pinstriping. There are some minor surface rust spots but other than that it looks pretty good and shiny when washed. I just want to know if anyone thinks I could get 2,000 out of it. I wish I had some pics but my digital camera isn't working right now. I'm just not sure now that the transmission is acting up. If I could just get it to shift right. Well, thanks anyways. I really do appreciate all of your advice.
Sorry to hear about yer little girl. I understand what ya are going through cuz we are going through it also with two boys. We have also lost two.
Anyway as far as getting 2k for you 79 I don't think ya will have a problem. The 78-79 model is in a class of it's own and should sell easy. Good luck with yer girl.
Where are you guys getting this info about C6's talking F type ?
It distinctly states that the C6 trans requires Ford # ESPM2C138-CJ or Dexron II
F type was used in the 1975 C6
Then 76 they changed to Dexron
C4's take F type.
The older units had semimetallic friction surfaces on the clutches and needed a special fluid so it depends on the type of friction plates installed, but most all C6's since the 70's use paper frictions like the E4OD and that's dextron type fluid.
Wow, sorry to both of you guys, and your families. I have two boys and have had a close call with the youngest; would never wish it on anyone.
I have sold my greatest joys in my automobile life, and every time, it was for my family.
As much as I love my Fords, my family comes first. Can always replace your vehicle, or even maybe buy it back some day, but not your loved ones. You have my prayers. Remember, God is in control.
