well if you spin the motor and trans around in the frame to get the motor in the back of the truck how do you get it to move the right way. if you were to just hook up the drive shafts it would go backwards in drive.....
Well, it will put the ring - gear on the other side of the housing - so it should.... but then again, my brain is fried, so maybe it isn't that easy. But in this sleep deprived state - I am pretty sure it is
except it would be pushing the gears apart instead of pulling them together.....Big tires, mud and lots of hp might not last that long.....thinking someone must make a ring and pinion set for this application
Why over think it, and make it so difficult? The answer is actually it is in the transfer case. Companies like "pro-Fab" machine make quick change aluminum counter rotating cases for mid engine applications. It would be close to impossible to just flip an axle. If you flip a front axle, the diff would be on the wrong side, and would actually need to be centered, and the rear would have to be offset, the caster on the knuckles would be way off, and the pinions would never lube. Brakes would have the bleeders on the wrong end. Too much would have to be done to try to make that work, and it would be a hack job at best.
Some guys move the engine and trans back, along with the body. This serves two purposes, 1. it changes the weight distribution considerably, and 2. improves approach angle. Depending on the truck, and engine / trans / case combo, could mean that the same length driveshaft for the front and the rear could be used. Carrying one spare shaft is always nice. Two of them take up so much space.
PLenty of work, just buy the right parts to do a clean job, and you will be pleased with the end results.
War Wagon:
We have more mud than you can handle year around right here in So.CA. One of our off road parks is in a reservoir. It always has water in it, and the level is always changing. Makes for real interesting mud, and tons of it. Lots of 44 inch tires, and plenty of horsepower, many guys trailer them in from a good ways away.
PM me, and i will invite you next time we head out......
