The impossible oil pump?

I have a 1995 F-150 with a straight six. The oil pump has gone out, and I need it replaced, but the mechanic is now telling me he is doubling his price because he has to pull the engine all the way out to change the oil pump. Does anyone have any experience with changing out the pump, and is neccesary to lift the engine out, or will jacking the engine up a bit do the job?

All he has to do is jack the engine up. Sounds like he's running up your repair bill.

That is what it sounded like to me. My Chiltons manual says to jack it up but does not say remove it. While I know those manuals aren't exact, leaving out the part where you HAVE to remove the engine sounds more than a bit questionable.

you have to unbolt the trans. mount and jack up the auto trans. as high as it can go.

remove the fan shroud.

it is a very tight fit but i did it on my six when i first got it.

i jacked up the auto tranny as far as i could, then jack the motor up(i was able to just leave the nut on the motormount bolt so i wouldn't have to worry about lining it back up. i did manage to get by with not removing the fan shroud however. it squeezed by(removing it would remove risk of breaking it though.) either the mechanic is trying to stick it to you or he's not a very knowledgeable one. either way i'd do it myself. i did it in a couple of hours with help from my dad.( he did all the cleaning of the pan, and handed me stuff so didn't have to keep crawling out from under truck) plus i don't like crawling around under truck without some close by.

I would, but I am without any of my tools right now, so I have to depend on someone else.
