Ignition Switch Mystery

OK, chasing an intermittent no-start problem... From all descriptions on the forums here, it seems replacing the ignition switch at the base of the steering column is a very straightforward process. So, I picked one up at the local NAPA and headed home to swap it out. Well, when I removed the dash panel to gain access to the switch, I was dumbfounded... What I can see down there looks NOTHING like the switch NAPA gave me, and in fact looks very odd alltogether. Yes it does have the lever arm from the key switch, and yes it does have a wiring harness attachment. BUT, it's also got what appears to be red thread (yes, thread) attached to it, running up into the dash behind the instrument cluster somewhere. What in the world is going on under there, and what do I need to do to replace my ignition switch??

i'd have to see pics of the two different parts to have any idea what is going on. does the one you bought look like a retangular block about 1 1/2" square and 3" long?? with the wire harness coming in on the long side, you should have 2 bolts that hold it to the column. if that's what you bought, then that's what's on my 95, but can you post a pic of the one on the truck??

Yes, the one I bought is exactly what I expected to see... However, whats in there is an absolute mystery. I'll try to snap a pic, but I'm just wondering if maybe I'm not looking in the right spot (not likely), or mine is some oddball configuration, or ????
