Hi all. I'm kind of new to the nitty-gritty of Ford 4WD's, so please bear with me. I have a '78 Bronco, 351M, C-6, NP203. The front hubs are manual hubs. Someone has told me that this means the NP203 has been "divorced", though I don't yet understand what this means. Her's my question:
On the 4WD shift **** are these positions:
LOCK
LO
N
HI
LOCK
And there is a blue "LOCK" light just above the 4WD shifter that illuminates when it is in either "LOCK" position. My question is what is special, if anything, about the "LOCK" positions, and is there anything special I need to know about it? I know how to use manual hubs, my old truck had them but this is the 1st time I've seen this pattern on a 4WD shifter. Thanks for the help!
no the np203 ISNOT divorced!!!the lock position just means that the transfer case is fully engaged in 4wd.an np203 in its stock form allows for some slippage like a differential.....so putting it into hi or low it isnt fully engaged..but when you put it into lock you have full power to both axles
Okay, I guess I got confused somewhere along the line. The guy told me that the NP203 was a full-time 4WD case, and that the presence of the manual front hubs indicated that someone had 'divorced' it. *shrug*
So then, if the front hubs are unlocked, does this setup then allow a "2LO" function by shifting into LO?
bigredbronco, The 203 is a full time transfercase. Since you have lockout hubs, and the truck pulls witout them being locked in, the transfercase has been converted to a partime case with a kit. My Dad had a 78 F-150 4x4 with the 203 transfercase, which he bought new. We had a Rough Country part time kit put in it back in 82, you had to stop the truck, put transmission in neutral, then shift the transfercase either to hi 4x4 or low 4x4. The instructions with the kit said you had to do this or damage could result. The old truck now has 214,000 miles on it, and it(transfercase) just recently took a dump. The other brand or newer kits may be different than this one though.
