How do I get to the engine?

I'm getting fuel in the valley. I've been reading this forum over a year now and I understand what I need to do about it. That is, clean up the valley and try to find the leak. I suspect I will be changing the fuel pump.

Everything I have done on the engine so far has been rather minor and routine maintenance. I usually just stand on the bumper and if I can't reach or see something like the fuel pump, I climb up on my knees in front of the radiator and get over the engine usually with one hand on the alternator. I'm not too enthused about doing this with the engine running looking for a leak with a mirror in one hand and flashlight in my mouth and I will probably want to use both hands to fix whatever. There must be a better way, plank across the fenders? scaffold? special purpose ladder?

I use a 5 gal bucket although not stable. Thought about some concrete blocks stacked at each corner of the bumper and a 2X12 on them (Cheap Scaffold).

At the shop we have a metal set of steps that are bumper level and has a 3' by3' platform. then I just lay on the engine/radiator. I always have sore ribs the next day. I ahve hear the top side creeper is great. One day I will build one but until then I will have sore ribs.

I have a friend that lets the air out of his front tires.

I concur with TJ. After 7.5hrs of doing my injectors, I was pretty black and blue. I lay a folded up packing blanket over the radiator for a little bit of padding.

Depending on what I'm doing, I use a step stool and/or folded blankets/padding over the radiator and front of the engine. I also removed the hood when swapping the turbo and downpipe.

Lightbulb

Im going to make like a big table, with a triplay (3/4, 6 x 9 feet) and some 3 by 4, and cover it with a soft carpet, so you can stay lay down on it, and it that way, is like to be playing in a floor carpet looking something in a big box, and you can move it forward or rearward as needed.

I made a stand out of 2x6's, goes across the entire front of the truck. I fall off once in a while but it' better than a hood latch in the gut. If I'm going to spend a lot of time under the hood I take the front tires off and drop it on the ground.

Try one of those steps that hang over the tire. Works great for me.

If you dont have the time to make anything and have 39.95 to drop. Lowe's sells a very sweet 2 foot high scaffold that is made by Werner and is the PERFECT height for your diesel. I picked one up a couple of weeks ago, and it has been some of the best spent 40.00 I have invested. It is about 40 inches long by about 14 inches wide, very light, very stowable. Works great at the front of the truck, or the fender sides.

Here it is:

That work platform from Lowes is trick. Tell the wife you got it to do "honey do" chores so the cost does not go against that "old truck.

No I did not notice that! Good catch, I would have been slightly upset if I had gone to town only to find it is for children and not full grown men. Of course with me, I would not have "noticed" until I got it home.

Take care,
Mark
