I just got a factory clock from the scrap yard for my 86 f150. my truck didn't come with a clock, could some one tell me what the 4 wires are for the clock so i can wire it into my truck.
thank you
If it was sitting in the hot sun for a long time, dont be surprised if it doesent run, or doesent keep good time. There are capacitors on the circuit board for the clock that dry out over the years. They can be replaced.
Dont know the colors, but,
1-wire is gnd.
1-wire is hot all the time.
1-wire is for the gauge light dimmer circuits
1-wire is switched.
There's a chance you may find the plug for the clock in your harness. In doing my 5 spd conversion, the plug for the pedal mounted saftey switch was already there. I cant say for sure it will be there, but take a look around before you start splicing, you might get lucky.
What year truck did you get the clock from? Although they look similar, the clocks from the later models are considerably different from the early 80's trucks, including the plugs. It might be worth snipping that end piece of harness from the donor truck and splicing that into yours.
I've put clocks in my trucks, yes there is a factory plug and you can plug it right in if you get the harness that goes between the clock and the plug on the main harness. It is located in the middle down by the floor, I think the plug has four wires.
Go back to the donor truck and get the short harness that plugged into the clock. Notice where the other end plugged into the main dash harness. Yours dash harness should be the same and thus eliminate the need for fabricating wiring.
i can't go back to the donor truck. so i have the clock and i guess i cut the short harness that goes between the clock and the main harness in half, so i'm just missing the plug part that plugs into the main harness plug.
So i should be able to find a empty plug coming off the main harness on my truck that is for the clock? and it should be near the bottom of the dash by the floor? does it have the same colored wires as the clock harness?
Since your truck is an 86, you should find the same colored wires in the factory radio harness. You can tap into that also. It will be closer than going to the floor.
Thanks for all the help!! i should be able to install it this weekend, i checked the clock by hooking it up to a 12v rig i have for test automotive parts and it works fine.
You have to hold the "time" button depressed while pressing the "set" buttons. If you're doing that and nothing happens then it is likely the various button contacts are oxidized from lack of use. Depress the buttons a large number of times each and hopefully they will wipe themselves clean. If not, you may need to partially disassemble the clock and squirt some electrical contact cleaner in the switches.
