F150 1988 diff question

What is the sensor towards the top front drivers side of the diff? it has 2 wires comming from it? also on the back of the crown wheel there is also a large fine tooth gear whats that for? I believe the diff is a 8.8 any help would be great

Those two work together as the RABS(rear antilock braking system) and on newer vehicles also sends a signal to the PSOM(speedo).
