I vote with the rest that you have a shorted battery. The old battery is pulling all the load from the new battery.
With the dual battery setup, you must change both batteries at the same time, with identical size and rated batteries,
When you hit the key all the power in the new battery is going directly to the shorted old battery.
Replace the old battery now and hopefully you have not damaged the new battery.
Yes your alarm draws power when the truck is off, but a stock truck also draws a small amount of current to keep the computer memory alive. When a vehicle sits, the batteries will discharge over time.
Get a "battery minder" trickle charger and keep your truck plugged into it at all times, and it will keep the batteries fully charged and good condition.
Disconnect that batt that is showing red! It should start with one GOOD battery. Be sure to cover the battery cables so they don't short to ground or each other. You may have ruined your alternator by putting in one new battery. After you get starting problem fixed, have them test your alternator.
I agree ... you've got a bad battery. The "eye" on those type of batteries should be green when it's good. When you said "the charger shows it good till you try and crank it then it shows dead". That right there tells me your battery is toast.
Always replace these is pairs. The weaker batt will always kill the stronger one. Do what BPofMD said and see if it'll start.
get youre self a couple of new batteries and youre troubles will go away I have had this problem every other year since moving to Phx the heat (& or cold) just kills them I have gotten the best life out of Optima's but I have yet to make it through the 72 month replacement warranty (more like 26 months is my current record) Kindest Reguards, Jim.
hotroddsl ... I know what ya mean. When I ran the Local NAPA you could mark the start of summer and the first cold snap of winter easily. We'd have a run on batteries over a couple days every year like clockwork.
Yep, change my batteries every 18-24 months like clock work in Phx, heat just kills them. I tried Optima's and they didn't seem to last any longer and are mucho expensive. Went back to batteries from Costco or Sams. Free replacement in the first 36-months no questions asked.
Admin .. yea sounds like your alarm is causing the issue. I bet if you were able to turn on the ignition and kick starter on ( jump the solnoid ) the truck it'd probably run.
