I just bought a 302 long block today. My '94 F150 Ext cab 4x4 is ready for a heart transplant. Anyone have any tips for a shade tree mechanic or special tools that may make life easier?? I will have at least one engine stand and a picker....thanks in advance
take pictures, label all your vac lines and find something to put bolts and nuts in so you dont lose anything. the harness can only plug into specific places so no worries there. do your best to follow torque specs so have a good torque wrench is good. dont get to happy with the air ratchet either. be sure to install a 195* tstat back in. are you installing headers? if not this would be a good time to do that. also a good time for a cam swap as well unless your just after a stock replacement.
its all good. just know that the stock manifolds will crack and when they do a new one is $100 by itself. which would crack again so headers would be the way to go a that time. Get a haynes manual as well , it will help alot
Got a Chiltons manual, plan to get a haynes as well. They delivered the block today so tomorrow is it. Have a new tstat, water pump, plugs and wires, and new mounts and clutch on hold just in case. And Away we go.....
Took three days and a little bit of luck...I have already put aroung 600 miles on her. Gotta change the oil this weekend. What a pain in the a$$ it is to try to cram it into 3 days. Quite the experience. First fill up netted 15+ mpg. Not bad with 31x10.5's. Can't wait to get past 2000 miles so I can open her up and see what I've really got. I'm keeping the tach under 3500 until then....seems like I get most of my power between 25 and 3500 anyway.

Get some of those grey egg cartons - the styraphome ?sp? ones might melt from the fluids. Put all your take off bolts and nuts in there and right on the side of the holder where they belong. Things will really go back together quick.
