Hello all, I'd like to get some opinions on what gauge brand you guys are running? i am looing at autometer boost, egt and trans temp. my questions is there is 2 differet ones for trans temp. electrical or mechanical? i am new to the whole diesel thing and dont want to screw things up or have to buy things twice. I am also up in the air about mounting them on top of the rear view mirror or a pillar. Any advise would be apreciated. thanks to all.
Hey, welcome to the site, i see you don't have too many posts. I have 5 Autometer gauges, three i originally had were Sport Comp's, and then i added two more, changed their locations, but the new ones i have are Autometer Z-series. Since the two new ones i wanted weren't made in the Sport Comp series, the Z series was the closest match. In my gallery below, you can see the Sport Comp's are the silver bezel and the Z series have black bezels.
I would recommend the Pillar gauges, for ones that are mechanical. A mechanical gauge has to have the acutal fluid come right into the back of the gauge. This means usually a 1/8" nylon tube has to be run through the firewall. My original plan for my two mechanical gauges i have (0-35 boost and 0-60 backpressure) i wanted to put the boost on the left and the Backpressure on the right in my instrument cluster gauges. But that is a very tricky routing scheme for the nylon lines, so i just put them on the pillar and made the elec gauges with easy-to-route wires in the hard-to-reach places. Point being, is that the overhead pillar would be harder to run the wires.
You want the electric trans temp gauge. The only mechanical gauge i would run into the cab is boost/backpressure/air pressure. Never a liquid!
I just ordered my DiPricol Optix gauges from ITP -- I think they look sweet, but obviously I won't know "in person" 'til they get here. But, ITP has a picture of them in a truck at night and they look VERY cool. CAN'T WAIT!! Here's a link:
I am running the Autometer phantoms as well, I like the white face, changed the dash plate for white as well, so all mine are white faced and red at night. There are a few pics in my gallery
Autometer phantoms 60 lb boost, pyro, trans temp, oil press, coolant temp..all with blue LED's..white face that glows blue at night...just like my dash...all electrical..I'm very happy...with the LED's they don't shine in the eyes..they glow for easy driving
Oh c'mon. Why would you want to go and start that crap? Cough up the accuracy proof or retract that BS. I suppose my DiPricols are good for my lawnmower as are Autometers?
