Hi everyone I have a 1986 F 150 Aprox 100,000 Miles on it. Frame is pretty well rusted But no holes.... yet, and I would like to keep it that way. I have heard of products to seal the rust up and keep it from progressing.
Do they work or are they a waste of time and money?
Do auto parts stores like PepBoy, Advanced etc carry these and under what Names?
Thanks for your help. Im not sure what my long term plans are for the truck origionally I had wanted to tear it down and restore it to the best of my ability but after purchasing a house Im not sure if finacially I can do it yet.
there are some things like POR 15 that get reviews though i dont know if they are good or bad reviews. I know when i was in the jeep scene that they used it a lot to coat the undercarriage and then the bottom of the tub, then covered the bottom of the tub with herc.
We used POR15 on the entire underside of our '85. Took the bed off and had everything sand-blasted that could be reached. Then we applied the POR15. This stuff is VERY tough. A helper got it on all of the nuts, bolts, and threads in the area he was working. Uh Oh! We just replace the I-Beams, and getting the bnuts to run past the threads with POR15 was killer!
If you use POR15, please keep it away from anything you may need to get a wrench to in the future!
Blasting is not needed. POR15 seals in any rust, so it can't breathe. At that point it is STOPPED in its tracks. We blasted beacuse we've gone overboard on this whole project.
POR15 can be found at most any good paint supply place. Don't let that intimidate you. It is meant to easily brush on. No gun needed. (Although it can be sprayed too.)
cryan i know for a fact you can find it at walmart and at autozone/advance auto. Where do you live... its not in your profile - if you have an orielly's they probably have it too since the people that have them swear by that store.
And thanks LS1 ... i'll check out the project. I'm gonna be doin POR 15 to the whole friggin undercarriage (minus bolts etc)... thanks!
It must be a location thing about the POR15. You can't get it anywhere around here (North Alabama) unless you're standing in a paint supply shop.
Also, POR15 is not a rust converter. (I think those products lack something for some reason.) POS15 just covers up the area with something I like to call "bullet-proof"! The rust simply can't grow anymore w/o air.
I used a zinc powder paint I bought from tractor supply. It's been two seasons in the salt pushing snow, and I am impressed so far. I just brushed the loose rust off and painted it after I replaced some of the crossmembers. Here's a picture when I was working on it.
This paint was rather expensive, about $50 per gallon, and you will not believe how heavy the can is. The hardest part is stirring it up. I used a propellor on my drill to get stirred up enough to use.
I beleive the zinc has a reaction with the metal. Ever seen pics or video of a new car assembly line, where the cars are getting "dipped" in a bath? Same thing.
I myself am thinking of ordering it in silver so that i can tell what has been covered and what has not, then i can spray over it in black to make sure all the POR 15 is covered. If its going to be in the sun it needs a top coat of some other paint. READ THE DIRECTIONS in the link i supplied because they are very specific... one bead of sweat can ruin the paint and if you seal the can with the metal cap while there is paint in the can it will be sealed forever.
Here are the prices from their website. PINT - $26.00
QUART - $38.75
GALLON - $123.75
