alternator wiring differences in years
i have a 96 EXP with 4L motor and the alternator has 3 bolt mount 3G. also have a 2002 EXP with the 4L motor. bought a spare alternator to fit both when needed. looked at the 2002 a little closer today and it appears to have the same 3 prong plug (with only 2 wires) and is missing the small 1 pin plug next to it. the 96 has two plugs, the 2002 has 1. question is, do i need a jumper if i put the old alternator on the new 2002? what is the single pin plug for?

it appears the 96 uses a 3G and the 2002 is a newer 4G, same side mount. drawing shows a jumper between the 3 pin connector and the extra startor pin.

The jumper is usually the stator connection to the regulator. I don't know why they did it that way, but it must be something about how it's physically put together inside. Most other alternators have it wired internally.
