I worked on an 02 F150 4.6L that had a #5 misfire. The owner put two COPs on it, and several plugs. The problem would be fixed for a couple days then return again everytime. I looked at it and it was missing the hold down bolt for the COP. I found a suitable replacement and fastened it down. When reconnecting I noticed the wire going to the pigtail was rough looking. Turned out it was broken inside, making the miss intermittent. I spliced the wire and it still runs smooth a year later. Probably not your problem, but I figured I'd get it out there to give folks something to look for.
I have an 03 5.4 that has a hard miss. (rpm's drop almost like a stall) it throws the SES light that always comes back as the CPS. Everyone keeps saying I have a bad timing chain. This may be true because you can hear the chain slapping around. I still think it could be COP or wire as well to cause such a miss. Any thoughts? I am torn between paying the 1200.00 for a timing chain or keep saving for a new engine. 140k on engine. Rest of truck in great sape. Sorry for book.

I have a 97 F150 5.4L XLT, just replaced all plugs, then my check engine light came on and was bucking alottttt, barely any power goin up hills, had it scanned, it was a misfire on #3, changed the coil pack light went off, 3 days later same thing with bucking and light is back on, again had it scanned misfire on #6, changed coil pack on that, and now again light is on and misfire on #4, is this going to be an on going issue until I switch all the coil packs out or should I just take a match to it ????? Thanks, Pam
