should I do the whole axle and ball joints as well?
strip the brakes ,hub bearings, etc back to the spindle. you will see bolts that hold spindle onto the knuckle. remove these and pull axle shaft out. you will spill some gear oil.
from here replace u-joint as usual. purchase a greaseable joint . while your in there check the spindle bearing . it is in the back side of the spindle, and is usually dry if u-joints are worn out. replace this and the seal and reassemble.
the passenger side is more involved because the shaft has two joints and you have to pull out clip from inside the differential to fix center joint.but, hey you said the drivers side!!!!!
it should take a couple of hours depending how dirty things areand what you find that needs repar or replacing as you remove parts to get to u-joints.
check the ball joints by grabbing tire when you jack it up and moving it in and out ,look for movement in upper and lower joint
this is a good time to inspect the bearings and locking hub and to service these thoroughly.
the front brakes were done in march and I replaced all seals, cleaned bearings, and repacked them with good quailty grease.
As for replacing the U-joints. I only use ones with grease fittings. I have yet to figure out how come auto manufactures don;t do this in the first place.
Thanks
you will have to repack bearings however.
the reason they don't put in greaseable fittings is probably to sell you more fittings and other worn parts that may result! planned obsolescence ?
all back together but I can't find a part now. the little washer that holdes the hub together with the little phillips head screw. Only thing I can think of is my 3 yr old snagged it from the box a parts and ran off with it.
I am screwed now!
