Is there any special trick to doing the cooler? I am assuming that you do not lose much ATF out the OEM line when the engine is off. I was thinking I would double up the Tru max downstream of the OEM cooler. Please respond if you have put one on. Suber
Straight forward and as easy as you say it is, dont let things rub when everything is installed and leave grill off for a 10 mile trip or so to check for leaks, then intall grill back on.
You have 2 cooler on your truck from the factory. There is one in the radiator and another in front of the AC condensor....I ditched this one and replaced it with this one: http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/me...roduct_Count=3
If yours has a thermal break (Thermostat) be sure to install it according to the instructions. I had trouble with mine because the markings on the thermostat rubbed off from just getting a little ATF on it. It will get confusing if that happens. I suggest you scratch those marking into the thermostat before starting the installation. BTW: I really like this cooler. The trans gets up to 175-180F within 3-5 miles, depending on ambient temperature and stays there. I pulled over 20K and never saw higher than 190F. IMO, There is such a thing as over-cooling your trans too. They are designed to operate above 140F. Before the thermostat was added to mine the trans wouldn't get higher than 120F in the winter and it took 20-30 miles to get it that warm. My .02 cents.
Thank You Cuda. I am wondering if my year needs the by-pass valve or not. I have a 97 350 4x4. I was also thinking about just ditching the OEM cooler and popping in the Tru-cool.
Cuda, I am pretty close on the fluid loss when I transfer the hoses to the new cooler? I am gussing it should be very minimal as it is not under pressure.
It's not so much the year that dictates whether you need a by-pass,.....it's the way you use your truck and to some extent where you live. If you are in the cold azz north you need the by-pass IMO. The tranny will take a long time to get up to operating temp when the air temp is, say, ~32F.
I doubt you lost enough fluid to make a difference. Just check after it's good and hot. It's better to be a bit low on fluid than to over fill it IMO.
