E4OD questions and stuff
I have an E4OD that was running (but leaking)when removed from a 94 7.3L N/A diesel F450 Superduty with a big service bed on it.
It was a "REMAN" trans and TC that my neighbor put in his service truck about 80,000 miles ago. It developed a leak in the front seal (behind the TC) and he decided to replace it with a ZF 5. He GAVE me the transmission, TC and cross member.
I am considering finding a 6.9 or 7.3L diesel and putting the two in my 55 F-600 when I finally do the complete restore on my 55.
I have a 5.83/8.11 - 1 2 speed axle and 9.00-20 tires so with the E4OD running in OD with the TC locked it should provide a rather slow turning RPM on the highway....I calculate a little less than 2100.
The N/A 6.9L or 7.3L will be plenty of HP for most uses since this truck originally came with a 223 cu-in 6 with a WHOPPING 118hp/193 lb-ft of torque!!
I know I'll need some sort of computer and speed sensor. My plan is to use a controller such as this one
I chose the E4OD (partly because I got one free!) but also it came from an F450 that is rated at basically the same GVW as my F-600. I'll probably replace that front seal and run it for a while.
I know there are some issues with the E4OD. My friend bought his F-450 new, ran it for about 100,000 miles and replaced the transmission bcause he broke it running a GCVW of over 20,000 lbs frequently.
He then ran it another 80,000 miles with the reman trans and decided to replace it with the ZF.
Does anyone know of the things I need to look for when I do rebuild my E4OD? I know there's things that should be updated to make it stronger etc.
There seems to be a wealth of info on the E4OD including modifications that will update it to a 4R100 etc..
I also have a ZF 5 speed but I'm going to sell that bad-boy. I just don't want to push a stick around in that tiny cockpit!
Thanks,
Rick

That ought to be interesting....
I'd be worried about brakes, but I'd bet you're on that one already...
I'm not too worried about the brakes....
It's got absolutely HUGE (double actuator rear) brakes on it plus a vacuum power boost.....all rebuilt with new stuff. They are VERY effective.
I've looked at all the following computer sites and they all do about the same thing.
I like the PCI computer so far.
