Im looking at a 04 f350 lariat with 95k miles with the 6.0 motor. I heard alot of bad things about that motor. Truck is real nice shape however and I was wondering if you guys forsee any major problems I might run into the near future with it. Ill be pulling a skidsteer and need reliability.
I'd get an oasis to see what maintenance has been done by Ford. Also, if it's changed hands several times, that could be a bad sign. With 95k, I would think the problems would be worked out by now unless oasis shows a history of repeated problems.
If it's a later 04, it's probably OK. Check the build date on the door, I think the problem engines were prior to 09/03 build. I've got an 04 and it's been a great truck. Only an EGR issue, fixed under warranty. You can also run an Oasis on it and see what warranty work has already been done. If the truck has been chipped you may want to reconsider buying it. Alot of the chipped 6.0's developed head gasket problems. Best thing is to really do your homework on it. A lot of the guy's on this site can run an Oasis report for you with the serial number. Good Luck...
I have an 05/03 build date 6.0L and would not take my 7.3 back for nothing...a little checking around and look under the truck..any oil or coolant...mine has been great and remember th bad things you hear about the 6.0L are only a few...there are alot of them on the road that are fine....you will love the power!
JK, first welcome to the site...you'll find ALL sorts of great info here.
I have an early built 03 6.0 with 43K on it now...and it's a beauty. She runs great and looks fantastic. I checked the 6.0s out before I bought this one. The early 6.0s were either great or were beasts to the owners. Ford seems to have fixed the problems in short order....so, that OASIS should tell the story...if it's clean you've probably got a great truck on your hands.
I got a carfax one (probably worthless) but it showed no problems but early on around 20,000 miles it said the truck had electrical system serviced. What does that mean? other than that, the next 70,000 miles showed nothing but oil change and chassis lubed every 5,000 miles.
I have F-350, 2005, KR, DWHL, 6.0. Beware of above post, "chassis LUBED every 5,000 miles." Two fittings, PERIOD. My latest trip was a plesant surprise for fuel economy as I crossed 14 mpg, real, no gauge, GA to PA. I think the 6.0 runs better on the new low sulphur fuel. 26K on mine, but latest is that I will change the shocks this week, as I got the death wobble. My next trip is pulling a T - 180 to PA from GA.
Final comment, and others can comment, but the "OASIS" report, is much like programming a computer. Garbage in, garbage out. My EGR valve was also changed, but no paperwork. I had an 2003, 6.0 Excursion. Last six (6) times in shop, no paperwork.
