Hello all , I am happy to have found this site and this is my first post as yopu can see. I am looking at a 1988 eddie bauer bronco, the truck looks like I would have thought accept when I crawled under it the frame has a heavy surface rust? the body mounts and all parts painted factory gray are fine is this just a case of wire brushing and a couple good coats of paint , or should I pass on this one,,, further it is from Maryland not a heavy snow area it show 61000. miles and has body rust at the rain gutters, side panel behind the pass. door bottom edge of the pass door under the front of the hood and the bottom edge of the tail gate I can get it for $2000.
typical rust...good price if the engine and suspension/4x4 is ok
have you driven it yet?\guess you know what to look for that could cause big $ to repair?
check for shuddering...
tranny shifts/clutch chattering
banging when taking off
etc

I suggest you read the Posts here and in the Ford Truck (our years) boards for typical problems with the expensive and diff to repair items.
if you can live with the rust, and the bronco is good running cond. then i would buy it too.
have you checked out other places on line for comparison $.most are going for ~$5,000?

Capt, that is low mileage for model if correct. Sounds like a good price too. There is a product called POR15 that is good for frame rust. There are a lot of new products out now to fix rust, if truck runs good, I would go for it. Good luck. Don

here it is:

as for the original mileage...that could be right...in the old days, we would check usual wear itmes such as the brake/clutch pedals for wear, driver's heel area on carpet or mat and radiator front for dings that appeared to be more than the indicated mileage.
In our state, a mileage disclosure statement Must be signed by the seller verifying the mileage (not that it helps much for older vehicles)
you can check the VIN through
http://www.carfax.com/
it will give you some info on ownership transfers and mileage for $19.95
we used it when buying a 99 contour and it showed orig reg date and mileages for two title transfers. we had some piece of mind with the report.
Do you have a good guy local mechanic that can look it over for you?
at worse, Pep Boys offers a check for about $100.00...but..some stores may be iffy.
I think after I got a Mech. blessing I will buy this truck. Out side of a lot of small items it needs a water pump I'll do the t-stat as well and a seal on a pinion gear?.. also I was wrong the truck does come from snow contry, the mech said there were lots of bolts that were stiff. does anyone know what I should get to interprit the decal in the door jamb to was equip. the truck has,
good luck!
