7.3 glow plug problems

Glow plugs/controller works good when engine is cold but when engine is warm the wait to start light nor the controller will come on and iy takes alot of cranking to start. I replaced the controller but it made no difference. Any ideas? Thanks, TD

well when the motor is hot, it shouldn't really need the glow plugs. this is wierd because it starts fine when cold and if air was the problem it would be hard to start when cold too. are you sure the new controller is not faulty

This is the 3rd controller for the truck. I replaced the original one about 6 mos. ago when I blamed the hard starting problem on the glow plug system but I really needed new batteries. The original controller would always turn the 'wait to start" light on and cycle the controller reguardless of how warm the engine was. The last 2 will not turn them on when the engine is warm. I agree that they shouldn't be needed when the engine is warm, maybe I have a fuel problem as well... Thanks TD

have you tested the plugs to see if they are all working.

Yes all plugs are good. ( I usually find one bad when the wait to start light goes out too soon) The problem must be eng. temp related because everything works fine when bone cold.

How many miles on the IP.......... sounds like typical worn out IP symptom.

Starts great cold......... no start hot.........

How fast is the starter turning the engine if you can count the RPMs it's too slow.

If you say you need new batteries, they could easily be the problem.

Granted the IP does have a lot of miles on it though.
