I am having trouble spraying primer surfacer. It just seems to keep splattering and doesnt spray even at all. I have tried adjusting the gun and air regulator, but cant get it to go on even. Any ideas? Also, how do you get it cleaned out of your gun?
Thanks, Matt
Are you thinning the primer with anything ? If not you'll want to thin it down with the reducer recommended with the primer. Cleanup is pretty much the same, once you pour out the leftovers, use some straight reducer in the gun to clean it out, remove the head to clean the inside and you should be ok. Don't leave it in there too long though or it's going to be a lot tougher to clean.
It'll change the build some, but allow it to flow through your gun properly which is more important. You'll still get good fill qualities from it and no matter what, you'll most likely have to prime more than once after you block sand it anyway.
First what type of gun are you using and what size tip. Bigger the tip the more viscos paint can be sprayed, I had problems with duponts uro primer because it was thick; installed a 1.8 tip and no more problems. Next what type of primer are you using that dosen't need thinning, every car paint I have used required thinning.
I was using an hvlp gun wiyh a 2.0 tip then tried a non hvlp gun with a 1.8 tip. The non hvlp gun actually sprayed a little better.
The pimer is Kustom Shop polyester primer surfacer. Says no thinning required, but can be thinned with acetone. No further instructions on thinning. http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/ksppolyprime.aspx
I am going to try to shoot some more this afternoon.
Thanks, Matt
a 2.0 tip should spray anything you want. Is the gun spitting or does it seem just like the matereal is not comming out of the gun. Put some material in your gravity geed gun and pull the trigger with no air and see if the material comes out of the gun, if it just drips out then thin the material.
also since the non hvlp gun shot better, what type of compressor are you using. Hvlp gun require a lot of air a small compressor is not going to cut it. I used a 80 gallon single stage compessor for a short time and got rid of it cause it could not keep up. now have a 120 gallon two stage and it does the job just fine.
I was wondering the same thing about his compressor size and the possibility that it just can't keep up. If that's the case he's going to have to work very very slowly, even a small compressor should let the gun spray even if it is for a short period though.
It is only a 25 gallon compressor. It shot epoxy primer fine, no problems at all.
It started having trouble with the thicker primer. Starts having problems right at the begining of me spraying, way before the compressor has time to die down. It spits in between bursts of nothing coming out at all. Never got around to spraying anything today.
Matt
With compressors, it's not so much the issue of how big the tank is or how much psi it will build but how many cfm it will push under load. Still though, if you've already sprayed one product without issue, I'd thin down what you're trying to spray through now and see if that doesn't help you out.
