Have any of y'all installed an exhaust brake on your p/u's? If so, what system and is it compatible with or without a turbo and how hard to install? Thanks in advance. Larry
I know BD makes one. I haven't run one. The IDI engines are not built to handle the stress of the exhaust brake. I think it is the valve train that is not up to the task.
I was trying to find if the valve train could be strengthened.
Hopefully more knowledgable people will answer you
just wanna clarify, a jake brake is inside the motor and slows it down by releasing compression as an exhaust brake is just a flap in the pipe that creates a lot of backpressure.
I think I remember the JAKE brake held the exhaust valve partly open and shut off the fuel.
Might have even left the intake valve closed at the same time as well.
The exhaust brake was just like "f100guy" said, heavy exhaust back pressure.
A "Jake" brake uses oil pressure to hydraulically open the exhaust valve just as the injector starts to squirt fuel. This 'steals' the power stroke and just keeps the compression stroke. Thus making the engine a big compressor. This was easy to do with the old Cummins and Detroit diesels because the injectors were pushrod driven off the cam. This made it easy to mount a small hyd. valve over the injector rocker arm to operate the exhaust valve piston.

A driveline brake works well but I havn't seen one around for awhile nor have I seen one for a pick-up. I don't know if anybody makes one for a truck like this. It is basicly a magnet that tries to keep the drive for turning when it's turned on. Might be worth looking into.

We have installed many of the BD Exhaust Brakes on the IDI motors, in fact that's where it all began for BD Engine Brake back in the late 80s, the early IDI's, 1st gen Cummins and early 6.5L GM,s, we did a ton of them back then and still do a lot today!
If the back pressure is regulated properly (like it is with the BD Brake),they are harmless to the motor. Automatic transmissions need to monitored with a tranny temp gauge with the early non-lock convertors.
