351 W and C

I was wondering what is the difference between the Windsor and Cleveland motors? Is one any better than the other and why?, and how can I tell which one I have?
Thanks.

The easiest way to tell is by looking at the radiator hose...The Cleveland connects directly to the block and the Windsor connects in front of the intake.

The motor design is very different between the two...Liking HP, I would have to go with the 351C.

351W = Windsor: 6 valve cover bolts, separate timing cover, fuel pump mounts to timing cover with two bolts at 3 and 9 o'clock.

351C = Cleveland & 351M/400: 8 valve cover bolts, timing cover is integral to engine, fuel pump mounts to engine with two bolts at 6 and 12 o'clock (the only FoMoCo OHV engine that has a fuel pump so mounted).

Moved from Washington Chapter to General engine forum. Let's keep tech threads in the truck sections. Thanks.

Modified works for me though as it is modified from the 400. But ya can call it Mary if ya like. The Clever is almost as heavy as an FE. So keep your suspension in mind if ya go that way.
Also the Windsor and cleaver share the small block bolt patteren, and the 351M/400 does not share with the small block

I've always heard that the Windsor is good truck motor that makes low end torque and the Cleaveland is a high horse car engine that revs alot more.

I've never owned a cleaveland, but I've got a windsor in my bronco, and it has a lot of low end torque, and I'd rather have that than horsepower any day.

Both will do either depending on how they are built. But in stock form I tend to agree with you

I've also heard about the Cleveland having problems oiling in the upper RPM's. I don't know if it's true or not though, just from what I've heard.

Again in stock form as a daily driver with proper maintenance that's not a problem. But one that needs addressed in High Performance racing engines.

In OEM trim the 351C is at least similar to the 351W in most things except the heads. The 351C 2V head has canted valves and much larger ports that flows better than the 351W (Wheezer) head. The 351C 4V head has monstrous ports and valves, so large that low end performance suffers from lack of velocity but at higher RPM's goes great guns making it a great high RPM powerhouse. For a daily driver I would use a 351W, even for performance since there are now great heads available for the Wheezer.

An advantage for the C when used for high RPM work is the smaller mains.

The C is also was offered with 4 bolt mains.........

Again, in stock form, it's really not an issue.
