I have been trying to locate the cause of problem in my front end. I have a knock (or pop) in the front left when suspension travels. I Have replaced all (4) ball joints, all steering joints (tie rods and drag link), wheel bearing as well. I am kind of at a loss. I'm not sure what else could be causing the noise. I am also sufferring from an alignment problem. It has been aligned at a very reputable shop for large trucks, but it still pulls. Any ideas?
popping noise is probably wornout spring bushings.
pull could be the tires. Did you get a print out of the actual alignment measurement? if you did post them and I can tell you if its alignment related. also if its your tires try rotating them front to back and if it goes away you have found your problem. sometimes a tire can cause a pull even though it looks good, wearing good and no other seen problems. I don't know why but every now and then it happens.
I read of a mystery front end pop over at TDS I think that turned out to be loose fender bolts. If I remember right it was two bolts up high near the cab/windshield. Several people chimed in on that thread saying that it was on the drivers side. Tightened them up and no more pop.
I had a similar problem in my Bronco that would only happen during the winter months. I turns out that I had a bad bushing in my transfer case shift lever, and the 4WD wouldn't totally disengage. This normally didn't matter, but during the winter I left the front hubs locked, so once in a while the transfer case would try to pick up, then let go, etc, and make a bunch of racket.
spring or axle pivot bushings possibly. the mysterious pull tj mentioned is sometimes caused by a radial pull. when tires are mounted on the rim they are supposed to be mounted all four with the same side out, if they are not, you get the radial pull. about a year ago i developed a clunk when the weight shifts forward or backward. if your moving forward, stop, reverse, when you brake in reverse it happens and the same if you are moving backwards, stop, go forward then brake it clunks. i have fairly new ball joints and all new bushings except for the front spring rear bushings.
