Welcome to FTE

The C6 transmission, was introduced in cars in 1966, F Series trucks in 1968. Every 360 or 390 engine with an auto trans will be a C6. The C6 was the best, most reliable automatic transmission Ford ever made.

Yes what Bill said. Although it could be behind almost any Ford engine. Remember that the bell housing and trans are one piece so it is engine specific. One from a 351m/400 will not fit a 360/390 FE. But I also think it is the best of Ford.

Yup, who knows what higher power came down to the ford engineers and gave 'em the C6. Toughest, simplest, easy to work on tranny in a Ford truck period. Kept on with minor updates here and there until '96.

Of course in our mortal world nothing is perfect and the C6 lacks an OD.

Ford tried to update that shortfall twice with the E4OD and then the 4R100, but they couldn't compare.

God speed Mr. C6.

BTW the name cruise o matic was introduced in 1958 (replaced the ford o matic) but the name was dropped in the early 70s. As I recall though the C6 was not labeled with that name, the cruise o matic evolved into the FMX

While Cruise-O-Matic was introduced in 1958, the Ford-O-Matic 2 and 3 speeds were still used till 1965.

Ford used the name Cruise-O-Matic to describe: FX, MX, FMX, C-4's and C-6's. Stupid and confusing.

The first Cruise-O's were MX for big blocks and FX used in Y blocks. The FMX was first introduced in 1969. The 1973/79 F350's with the 300 six used FMX's. and a few 1980's trucks used FMX's. That's it for the trucks. The FMX was mostly used in cars. After the FMX came out, the MX and FX Cruise-O's were dropped.
