Hey guys,
Here is where I am at…
I have bought a late model 5.0 motor out of a mustang. It needs completely rebuilt. I have it torn down and plan on having it overbored .030. I am going to run gt-40p heads along with some shorty gt40p headers. I plan on using edelbrock’s truck 5.0 intake. Now here is my question…Should I run the roller cam or not? If so about what size should I run? I plan on do some towing of my Cobra, so I need some good low and mid range. I am not really worried about high horsepower #’s, just some decent torque #’s. Now, I know that a 5.0 will not produce the power of a 351 but I have most of the 5.0 parts, so going to a windsor is not a option.
I thought about just going with a hydraulic flat tappet cam, something mild like the edelbrock performer cam. I believe it specs at 270/280, 44?,476. I think that would be a decent low end cam. If I go with a roller cam, what gains in power will I see, and what cam specs should I look for? I would really like to hear from people who have swapped ver to roller cams.
Thanks,
Rich Taylor
If the engine is out of a late model mustang ('86-'95) the stock cam is a roller cam. It comes factory with roller lifters also. Ford Motorsport has several hot cams for the late model 5.0. The only cam they make that is emissions legal is the E-303 cam. It makes a nice loap and makes it's power in the lower RPM range. They also have some hotter ones, B-303, X-303 and Y-303. B-303 is the larges I would get for a street car. It is an awesome cam and sounds great. Kinda hard for me to picture a towing vehicle hitting a lick though. Just me....Check out a Ford Motorsport catalog and see what you think. That's my 2 cents.
