Ok...I have some off road lights on the brush guard of my truck(you can look at my gallery if u need a visual)...it looks to me like whoever put the in simply spliced them in to turn on with the brights...however when I'm sittin at a light with them on my lights start to flicker...any suggestions? also, doeas anyone know how to make it so my actual lights won't go bright and it'll jus turn on the off road lights and not my actual brights?
It sounds like you just want to unhook the lights from the headlight circuit and put them on a switch. All you do is cut the positive wire (usually the red one) to each of the lights and wire them up to a relay. But that may not help your flickering problem. It sounds like they are drawing a lot of power that your alternator can't supply.
Smokey Bear is most likely correct. what year is your truck? some late models only have about a 14 ga. power and ground wire, meaning you wouldn't really wanna add on to this system. I would run them on a relay with a 12 ga fused supply wire and ground. on the control side of your relay you can run the toggle on the ground side to promote safety (in case of meltdown) or you could put your toggle on the power side of the control circuit and run it in series from the power wire of either low or high beam so they can come on automatically or you can turn them off in town.
it's a 1970 F-100...and I'm kinda jus startin out wit this kinda stuff wit electrical and wutnot...so if you don't mind puttin it in layman's(proly spelt that wrong) terms for me id appreciate it
wish i could draw you a pic, i could make it really easy 4 ya. i really don't know how to say it easier. a relay is basically a solenoid. it has 4 wires. there is usually a pic on the side of it that shows which terminals go to the control side, and which terminals go to switch side.
