Alright, my speedometer has been acting pretty strange recently. I was driving a few weeks ago and noticed that it was reading 85 when i was running 45(I've memorized the equivelant on the tach, i.e. 45MPH ~ 1300RPM in OD, 55 ~1550, 65 ~ 1800). At the stoplight, it went past 100, and i was sitting still. Went to work, shut it off, and it stayed there. Came out, started it, dropped it in gear, and it goes to zero. Works perfectly for the next week, then at 70 on the highway, cruise on, the needle goes to 85. Whack the dash, returns to normal. Now, at different speeds, it bounces to different readings, and only because of how well I know the truck, I've avoided tickets for speeding.
I've read some posts about the VSS, and, I don't believe thats the issue. When this started, that's what i thought it was, but, with the cruise remaining on, and the odometer and trip meters reading acurately(even with the Speedo at 0 or 100, it continued to count mileage), I'm leaning toward it being the instrument cluster.
Any Ideas? I'd hate to shell out for something I don't need, so, any help is appreciated.
We had the same problem on one of our GMC company trucks with electronic gauges. Turned out to be instrument cluster. When I removed it, the needle moved, " with more drag ", than the rest of the gauges. Rebuilt cluster solved the problem.
